Alcohol Ink Butterfly Card
Well, I spent the afternoon playing with alcohol, and no, not the drinking kind! I mixed up a new batch of 'sky blue' alcohol ink and think I finally have the recipe down pat! I posted a card similar to this one last month but I have made a few changes. The background is liquid alcohol ink, applied with a felt pad and using the blending tool in a pouncing motion. I painted the butterfly by using Distress inks on a glass plate and mixing them with water, then applied a few spritzes (is that a word?) of Shimmer Mist to the wings.Although the camera really did not pick up any of the shininess or sparkle, it does make the butterfly look as if it could fly right of the card! I added a very small sentiment, but I really like the card plain, it looks like a photograph! Have a great day!

Very nice. I think I have caught the alcohol ink craze! We just got back from celebrating Dave's Dad's 75th birthday with 30 friends and family. I made his card based on an idea I saw on the internet which I totally recognized as being the distressed alcohol ink method you showed us in class. Of course though, I didn't have alcohol based inks, and no time to actually try to make the inks, so that is definitely on my list to try!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome Debbie! I have several students that have been bitten by the Distress Ink bug!I'll do this card with you guys next month. It features a couple of new techniques that are fun to try. I just finished getting your card packets ready for next class, it will be on th 24th, if it's the last Friday of the month. Let me know if that's the right date. Hi Tracey!! I tell everyone about you girl, you rock!
ReplyDeleteYep, it is. We may or may not have a 6th person this month for cards which is the 24th. Jenn's mom or mom-in-law may join us. Chantal, my other friends is done with her lady in Petawawa in March and would like to join us starting in April. So we'll see what's up with everything then. I'll tell Tracy your comment, she will be pleased. :) The project for this afternoon is to make some baby thank you cards for her French teacher who is going on maternity leave starting this Friday. We made her a set of 20 thank yous in her wedding color 2 yeara go and she loved them, so Tracy wanted to do baby thank you cards this time -- trouble is she doesn't know if she is having a boy or girl -- so many cute ideas if you know which! LOL So I guess we will be doing greens, yellows, etc. Wish me luck!
ReplyDeleteSilly question, but once you make the alcohol inks using the sharpie pens, I know you store it in a closed container, but to use them, do you dump them into a plan stamp pad?
ReplyDeletesorry, should read "plain" not "plan" or an uninked stamp pad for use?
DeleteI make a batch of alcohol ink in a glass jar then transfer it to a squeeze bottle. To use it place a felt rectangle pad onto your blending block and squeeze a few drops onto it and pounce it onto glossy cardstock. You can also put it in a spray bottle and use it that way too. I will demonstrate how to make it and use it at our next class. I make my felt pads from thin cotton quilt batting, but you can use ordinary crafting felt. You might need a bit more ink as crafting felt is more absorbant. See you soon!
DeleteThanks! Couldn't remember that part! Anxious to try them! I did notice that some colors once soaked didn't really look like the color they were meant to be, so interested to see how they come out!
ReplyDeleteOK -- so I thought I would transfer some of my wooden stamps and make them into the clear ones like you showed -- Dave jumped right on that this morning and decided to microwave the first one for like 45 seconds even though I told him 20 max. Hummmm -- what's that smell in my house, a combo of wood and rubber! Lesson learned -- never let a man near your craft stuff and the microwave! LOL
ReplyDeleteOh no! I put them in the microwave for 10 seconds then test it to see how easily the rubber comes off. Garland knows my craftroom is off limits! I don't touch anything to do with bass fishing and he avoids crafting like the plague! I'll show you how I do it on card night, and we'll play with some liquid alcohol ink too! At least Dave shows an interest in your hobby!
DeleteLooking forward to your demo at the next craft class, my first try with the stuff today did not go very well! LOL
ReplyDeleteThe liquid alcohol ink is not an ink that you can stamp with, it's more for creating backgrounds. You can pounce it or spray it and mix them to create new colours. You can also add mica powder to them to create shimmer spray.
DeleteI may have used too much -- I did spray it though, but found it left the paper too wet! LOL
ReplyDeleteI'll leave you alone now til next Friday!
