My Poor Baby Squirrel!

I have been feeding the birds and squirrels in my backyard for many years now and last summer one of the squirrels had babies and they were so tame I was able to hand feed them.  They wait at my backdoor every morning for their seeds and I have developed quite a realtionship with them! I opened my backdoor this morning to discover one of my 'babies' was badly hurt! He is missing his entire tail and his ears are all shredded.  He just sat there staring at me and I am heart broken! He is able to walk and did eat his breakfast but I have no idea how he was injured. I don't know how to help him, I am a little nervous to try to touch him as injured animals sometimes bite. Does anyone have some advice? I really don't know what to do. :(

  1. Oh Dear -- sorry I don't know what you can do Jennifer. Did you try calling the Wildlife . . . gosh can't recall their names, but there must be someplace in the area because of Algonquin Park that helps with injured animals. Maybe call the OSPCA and ask them who you should call. Poor thing. Debbie

  2. Actually, I never thought of that! I've been so upset over it, I've spent the day in the backyard watching it. I'm going to call right now!
    Thanks,

  3. Just got off the phone with the SPCA, they were so helpful! She told me to mix good quality dry catfood and ground corn to help keep him warm Apparently, ground corn can help boost body temperature. Thanks for your help, now I'm off to get ground corn at M & R Feeds! I'm nuts!

  4. Glad I could help! One of my mom's for daycare use to be the OSPCA's public education co-ordinator, so anything regarding animals, tame or wild, I think of her . . . hummmm, don't think that sounded quite right, but anyways! LOL
